Transforming the Healthcare Experience
Phil’s skills are exceptional and industry-leading in envisioning, designing and implementing advanced electronic health records (EHR). He was responsible for much of our success at deploying Cerner Millennium and CPOE across our multi-hospital health system.
Phil initially came to Moffitt to assess our Meaningful Use participation. He ended up going far beyond meaningful use by helping us develop and execute a strategic roadmap for our transition to optimal use of EHR. His leadership has been so effective that we now view EHR as a strategic asset rather than a liability. The EHR transition led to a transformation in our culture, structure and governance models. We look forward to continuing collaboration with Phil to help us further leverage data and information to improve our NCI-designated cancer center. It has not been an easy journey, but Phil has helped us set a vision for success that aligns with our strategic plan.
Phil Smith remains one of the most knowledgeable and capable physicians working in the exploding realm of health information technology. His innovative use of early electronic health records in practice and his work in product development and consulting at Cerner Corporation surfed his unique approach to the implementation of computing at the point of care for clinicians in multiple domains and venues of care. Phil’s intensive and dramatically successful implementation of comprehensive clinical computing tools across a huge health system in the United States, with particular focus on computerized provider order entry (CPOE), culminated in his superb book on the practicalities, benefits and potential pitfalls of new information tools in medical practice. I highly recommend his expertise to any organizations or informaticians seeking success in efforts to enhance the adoption of this exciting technology in our changing industry.
“Dr. Smith was extremely interested in helping me grow in my professional as well as personal capacity. He was always there to coach and guide us. He provided vast knowledge and expertise in medical informatics. He coached us through personal challenges and focused on my personal success. He fostered and championed my passion for writing “peer review” articles and presenting at regional and national forums. I frequently told him that he knows ‘how to carve a diamond out of a piece of coal.’ I believe this is the greatest testimony a student can give his mentor.”
